To be honest, the anime is the one that got me interested in the card game, though it was confusing to me and my other friends that I played with cause my friends usually follows the monster effects from the anime rather than from the official rules of the game, and also God Cards are really OP as hell.
Another thing, my favorite card to collect is Black/Dark Magician Girl, favorite card to use is Shinato, King of a Higher Plane.
